Torsion vs. Extension Springs: What's the Difference?
Most Texas homes built after 1990 use torsion springs — a single (or double) steel coil mounted horizontally above the door on a metal shaft. They work by twisting under tension to counterbalance the door's weight. Torsion springs are more durable, provide smoother operation, and fail more gracefully than their older counterparts.
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door. They stretch (extend) as the door closes, storing energy to help lift on the way up. Older homes and lighter, single-car doors commonly use extension springs. They're generally rated for fewer cycles (8,000–12,000 vs. 10,000–15,000 for torsion) and when they snap, the energy release can be more violent.

Loud Bang from Garage
A sudden loud bang — especially when no one is in the garage — is the classic sound of a torsion spring snapping. The coil releases all its stored energy at once. If you hear this, do NOT try to open the door manually. The full weight is now unsupported.
Door Won't Open Fully
If your door opens 6–12 inches then stops, or feels extremely heavy to lift manually, your spring may be broken or severely weakened. The opener motor is working overtime to compensate — and it will burn out if you keep using it.
Visible Gap in Spring Coil
A visible separation or gap in the spring coil means the spring has already snapped. You can see this by looking at the spring above the door when it's closed. Stop using the door immediately and call a TX garage door pro — do not attempt to fix this yourself.
